The Family Law Section is pleased to announce its inaugural Family Law Section Pro Bono and Not for Profit Scholarship for family law practitioners.

This scholarship is to acknowledge the important work done by those who work in the access to justice and pro bono sectors.

 
To be eligible for the Scholarship, a candidate:

• Must be a lawyer holding a current Australian practising certificate (as at the date of their application); and

EITHER be employed by the Legal Commission of their State or Territory or a Community Legal Centre; OR be a private practitioner whose practice is at least 75% of work pursuant to a legal aid grant or is pro bono work.

‍One Scholarship will be offered to the value of $6,000, including: 

• Cash prize $1,500
• Full registration for the 20th National Family Law Conference to be held in Perth on
  30 October 2024
• One ticket to the Welcome Reception at the National Conference on 29 October 2024
• One ticket to each Happy Hour at the National Conference
• One ticket to the Gala Dinner at the National Conference
• Up to $1,500 for airfares and accommodation (to be booked through the Family Law Section)
• One FLS membership for 2 years.
• ‘Winner of the Family Law Section Pro Bono Scholarship 2024” branded stamp.

All submissions will also be considered for publication in Australian Family Lawyer.

To apply for the Award eligible candidates must submit an original unpublished article of no more than 1,500 words (including footnotes, appendices, and tables) by 1 July 2024 on the following topic:

“How I would fix the Australian Family Law System if I was Attorney-General for a day”

Candidates must complete and lodge the required application form with their article and be prepared to attend the entire conference. 

Applications for the scholarship will be assessed by the FLS Executive and a response will be provided to all applicants by 4pm on 1 August 2024.

Feedback will not be provided to individual applicants and the decision of the FLS Executive is final.
